How Hot is Your Cocoa

How delicious do these little cuties look? And they are so easy to make! All you need is:

. a bag of marshmallows

. almond bark or chocolate chips

. nonpareil sprinkles

. cute straws or sticks

Once you have the necessary ingredients, it only takes a few minutes to get these hot cocoa stirrers finished. (Literally, you'll spend more time finding this stuff in the cabinets then it takes to make them.) First, stick your straws or sticks into the center of the marshmallow. Just be careful not to stick it all the way through. Next up, melt the almond bark or chocolate chips in the microwave or over a double boiler. I find almond bark melts better for dipping than chocolate chips and it also microwaves well too, but either will work for the stirrers. After dipping the marshmallows in chocolate, coat them with sprinkles. Let them sit for about 10-15 minutes to be sure they are dried completely.

The best part about Hot Cocoa Stirrers is that you can display them in so many ways. Try setting them out on a plate or place the sticks in a jar with the marshmallows sticking out. You can also individually wrap each one and tie a cute ribbon around it for a great holiday party favor. They make great desserts by themselves, but they are perfect when paired with hot cocoa. Yum!

If you are anything like me, you love the holidays, but are always looking for a new way to add some spice to your traditional Thanksgiving meal. This year, I found the perfect addition to my Thanksgiving tablescape. You may have heard of mashed potato bars at weddings, but they are also the perfect way to create a fun appetizer while your guests wait on the main event.

Setting up a mashed potato bar is simple and the best part is there are tons of ways to make it unique based on what your family and friends enjoy. To begin, you will need a delicious mashed potato recipe. Then grab some cute bowls, dishes or even martini and wine glasses that you have lying around the house to fill with your mashed potato toppings. Depending on your taste, you can pick from any number of topping options. Be sure to label your topping options with fun labels from Flair Designery! Our favorite toppers are butter, feta cheese, salsa, roasted red peppers, steamed vegetables, chives, basil pesto, jumbo shrimp, roasted garlic, rosemary, sautéed mushrooms and bread crumbs, but the possibilities are truly endless.

DIY: Cupcake Fun with Custom Cupcake Pedestals

One of the fun parts of my holiday table House of Fifty feature was creating easy and inexpensive DIY projects that you can include on your holiday table or really any party table. I have seen online a variety of companies that offer cake and cupcake pedestals for $70+ and I thought...I can do that and I can make them in whatever colors I want AND add fun ball fringe!!! The best part...I did this all for $2.50!!!

You Will Need:

Pack of 6 Wooden Candlesticks (bought from Hobby Lobby for $2.99)
Pack of 2” Wooden Circles (bought from Michaels for $1.99)
3” round Kraft Ornaments (brought from Michaels for $0.99)
All Purpose Permanent Adhesive
Primer and Paint (color of your choice)

STEP ONE: Place a dime size amount of glue on the flat bottom of the candlestick and then adhere to the 2” wooden circle. Let stand about 20 minutes.

STEP TWO: Line the top of the wooden candlestick with glue and then adhere to the center of the 3” round kraft ornament. Let stand for at least 30 minutes before painting.

STEP THREE: Because wood is bare you may want to primer first before painting. If you do not primer, it will just require an extra coat of paint.

FUN DETAILS!!! You can wrap ribbon or pom-trim around the lip of the top of the cupcake pedestal to match any party or holiday.

House of Fifty Feature

Loving Christmas and candy as much as I do, this was the perfect chance for me to design a fabulous and fun collection that showcases trendy new designs AND to design (and eat) a candy table. DIY: Custom Glitter Vase Cover

With the holidays officially here, I am always looking for fun, new and inexpensive ways to fancy up a table. These glitter vases can be used for so many things...looking for a fun way to house your silverware? Want to sass up a simple clear vase? This is quick and simple and makes a HUGE impact all for under $5.

You Will Need:

Round Kraft Hat/Gift Box
Mod Podge
Inexpensive Paint Brush
Glitter
Glass Vase

All of these items can be found at your local kraft store such as Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joanne's, etc.

STEP ONE: With paint brush apply Mod Podge liberally from top of box to the bottom across entire box.

STEP TWO: Sprinkle glue covered box with glitter and let stand for 2-3 hours.

STEP THREE: If there are any spots that need more glitter, you can touch up with glue and glitter. When dry place glass vase inside newly glittered vase cover and fill with flowers.

Here's A Sign That it's Wedding Time

I have always thought that more couples get married in July and August than any other months of the year. Was I ever WRONG! September and October are now the busiest months for those typing the knot. And in keeping with the belief that weddings are as much of an event as a celebration, we are constantly creating new wedding signage for the DIY Bride!

Chic and Shabby Baby Shower

I absolutely love shabby chic and was really inspired to create a collection that was the essence of what I feel shabby chic is. And imagine how thrilled I was when I was told it would appear on Amy Atlas' absolutely amazing web site!!! It is also now available on the Flair Designery Etsy Shop...

My absolute favorite part of this Chic & Shabby collection was the pear name tags. It was one of those things that just came to me while I was creating this collection...and I had one of those cerebral moments where I thought, "this is the best thing I have ever thought of!"

Isn't this the most beautiful table you have ever seen!!! I couldn't have done it without Jill and her perfect vintage finds and help with the styling. The plates and small colored glasses were the most perfect addition to the table top.

All of the foods were baby girl themed. The menu included Bambina Burgers, Petite Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup, Mini Fruit Skewers, Baby Cake Cupcakes, and more!!!

We used vintage Ball Jars to hold the Peony Flowers. Quite possible my favorite flower!!!

I Salute, this NAVY Blue TA DO...

I hear wedding bells..."Royal" wedding bells to be exact. The highly anticipated wedding ceremony of the handsome, Prince William, and the dashing, Kate Middleton, will take place at Buckingham Palace, in just under a month.

So, when you think "Royal,” what comes to mind??? For me, when I think royalty- I think navy blue. Navy is classic, elegant, and polished. Adding splashes of gold and/or silver adorned with crystals, sequins, and or glitter for a little sparkle would make for a fancy affair. Although, any color can be fancy-just note the chic royal wedding watch party invites in the last posting.

On the other hand, blue can be quite casual-think beachy...breezing...think nautical-a carefree lifestyle of sailing the waters of the Caribbean while wearing a navy blue bikini and boat shoes. If this is what floats your boat-why not embellish the occasion with cute anchor accessories such as the one pictured above, designed by the one, the only-Abby Barnett!

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. So, of course we had to celebrate with a little green inspiration! Green is so fresh and crisp. It can be casual or glammed up with the right accessories. Green looks great paired with so many colors-gold, navy, or pink-just to name a few. Being the “girlie-girl,” I am- I’m a sucker for anything pink and green. In fact, the chevron table number featured above, designed by Flair Designery, is the pattern that will be displayed on everything from invites to banners for my upcoming October wedding!

Mardi Gras Merriment

Mardi Gras has always been one of my favorite memories from my college days. Each year, a group of friends and I would trek the 10 hour drive from St. Louis to NOLA for a quick yet mighty weekend of fun. Some of my best memories are the fighting for beads at Endymion parade, eating King Cakes and beignets, and feasting on all of the Mardi Gras fair!!!

If looking to add a little fun to your Mardi Gras fete, here are some tasty treats that are sure to "Let the Good Times Roll!"

Purple Jesus via Top Party Ideas

Purple Jesus Recipe

1 part Vodka
1 part Purple Grape Kool Aid
20 purple seedless grapes
20 white seedless grapes
Fish wire
Large punch bowl

Make Purple Kool Aid according to directions. In a large pitcher measure equal portions of Kool Aid and Vodka. Mix. Chill in fridge.

Decorate by stringing grapes in a strand using fish wire to make a long necklace like Mardi Gras beads. Repeat the same with white grapes. Freeze grape bead necklaces.

Take chilled pitcher with Purple Jesus mix and pour into a punch bowl. Float frozen grape necklaces in punch bowl when ready to serve.

Crab Cakes via Epicurious

Crab Cakes Recipe

1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
3 tablespoons finely chopped celery
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large egg
1 tablespoon sour cream
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
3/4 teaspoon cayenne
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons thinly sliced scallion greens
16 saltines, finely ground
1/2 lb jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Cook onion, bell pepper, and celery in 1 tablespoon butter in a 10-inch nonstick skillet over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened.

Whisk together egg, sour cream, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne, and salt in a large bowl, then stir in scallion, cooked vegetables, and 1/4 cup saltine crumbs. Gently stir in crabmeat, then form into 4 cakes (2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter). Dredge cakes in remaining saltine crumbs.

Heat oil and remaining 2 tablespoons butter in cleaned skillet over moderate heat until foam subsides, then cook crab cakes, turning once, until golden brown.

I have to admit; purple has not always been one of my favorite colors. I don’t know why I wasn’t digging it before, but NOW I’m all about it!

Recently, at the 2011 Academy Awards, purple made a strong appearance. Just to name a few, Academy Award Winner, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis both graced the Red Carpet in beautiful and elegant shades of purple.

With all these shades of purple catching my eye, and the upcoming weekend full of FUN and CRAZY Mardi Gras MADNESS, I thought it would only be appropriate to feature purple. So, add a purple to your wardrobe or event this season and you will surely SPARKLE!

Simply stated...I LOVE WINE. My pallet is usually one of a sweet nature, which is why I highly enjoy Moscato d'Asti. I was first introduced to this dessert wine a number of years ago by good friends of mine on a weekend trip in Chicago. Since then, I have been hooked! This low-alcohol, sweet sparkling white wine comes from the Moscato Bianco grape and is produced mainly in the province of Asti, in north-west Italy. My personal favorite is Michele Chiarlo Moscato d'Asti '09. You can pick this up in many local wine and spirit stores or online. This wine makes for the perfect hostess or house-warming gift, or is lovely to enjoy with family and friends over your favorite dessert!

My little brain has been working overtime the last few weeks and this is only the beginning!!! I love untraditional holiday decorations. One of my most favorite magazine spreads I have ever read was in the late Blueprint magazine. They decorated in pink, silver and gold. How perfect!!!

Usually around the holidays, for a little inspiration I start flipping through my favorite magazines that I have lovingly saved. I came across this fabulous layout and thought I HAVE TO bring that to my holiday collection at the Flair Designery Etsy Shop! In my daily life I frequently get stopped and asked where did I get a piece of jewelry, a pair of shoes, and how I did my smokey eye make-up. Well girlies...I'm here to help you out! I have a quick and simple way to get the perfect smokey gray eye!

Line the entire eyelid with a silver eye liner. It can be messy...don't worry...simply smudge with your 4th finger.
Line the bottom of your eyelid with the silver eyeliner as well.
Find a silver shadow, such as Gunmetal from the Urban Decay Nakeds Collection and cover the entire eyelid.
With a small flat angled brush (commonly used for eyelining the eyes), line the top and the bottom of your eyelid with a darker silver/graphite color, such as Creep from the Urban Decay Naked Collection.
Next, take a small fluffy angled brush and use the same dark silver/gray color in the corner and crease of the eye.
If you never have done this before, now is the time to learn with a black liner, my favorite it Smolder from Mac, line the inside of the top and bottom of the eye. This will take some practice, but trust me you will love this!
Next, take a black shadow, my favorite is Carbon from Mac, and using that small flat angled brush, lightly press the shadow over the black eyeliner. This will help keep the liner from running.
EXTRA STEP: Now the totally fun part!!! Using a silver glitter eyeliner, Urban Decay has a great one called Glam Rock, dot the eyelid and around the corner of the eye with the glitter liner. Smudge with finger to give a little more unpolished and fun look.
Curl your eye lashes and add 2-3 coats of mascara!!!

While driving home last week I passed by a newly opened resale shop. The cleverly colored letters peaked my interest, so I committed to memory it's location and promised I'd check it out. So, over the weekend I was finally able to actually remove myself from designing (more to come) and headed out in anticipation of what small treasures I might find.

For some time I have been wanting a new mirror to place my perfumes on. As a small child, I can remember going to my grandmothers and going into her bedroom to simply admire her mirrored tray full of different perfumes and fingernail polishes. For some reason I always wanted to try all the nail colors on and smell all of the fragrances. I cannot tell you how many times I did this growing up. SO ANYWAY...I was so thrilled to come across this little gem!

I instantly scooped it up knowing just what I was going to do. Luckily for me the mirror slid right out of the back. I went to my local Michael's and picked up some hot pink spray paint. I have a vision in my head of what I want my bedroom to look like (when I actually get a chance to redo it) and this piece will fit in perfectly! I sprayed three coats on both sides and let air dry for 24 hours and...tada!!!! My new mirrored perfume tray. Isn't it gorgeous!!!!

And here's the best part...the mirror cost me $4 and the paint cost me $6. I have an absolutely original piece for a fabulous $10!

Hair Obsessed

Some people call it obsessed...I like to call it perfectionism. I have been coloring, cutting, and styling my hair since I was probably 14. My hair has been almost every color except for blue, and yes...green...totally by accident. So my newest craze since watching Lacy on American Idol is been how in your face reddish/burgundy can I really get my hair. Before this and for quite some time, I was rockin' my light brown frock. A few years ago I was going through a little life turmoil and thought, what the hell, let's chop it off. So, and I like to think before the trend, I cut my hair like Victoria Beckham and bleached it blonde. Soon though, I started to see everyone with this cut, and I was quickly over it. Next came the violet streaks. I have to admit, this was and probably still is one of my top favorite colors I've had. I got more compliments from men on this than women. But alas, once again I grew bored...enter red!

Let me tell you! This is not an easy color to maintain. One of the best tid-bits of advice I can give is if you are going this bold and you are a brunette (naturally) like me, use a protein filler first. It is so simple to use and the benefits are outstanding. You can pick this up locally at Sally's or online at amazon. I swear by this! You simply wet your hair first, towel dry, then spray about 2 oz. on and let air dry for 20 minutes. Nest you apply your color to your damp hair. Wait the alloted time and then proceed with rinsing the color out and conditioning.

The next little gem of information that I can pass along relates to deep conditioning. This color is a uber-pain to maintain and must be redone every 4 weeks. My hair, for some strange reason has a hard time holding red so it get to 4 weeks is painstaking on my half. All of the constant dying can cause havock on your hair, so the next secret is the Aussie 3-minute Miracle deep conditioner . I have tried MANY product in my time from top of the line, $65+ a bottle products to off the shelf brands and I totally am amazed with the conditioning that I get from this product. Coupled with the smell and the low price of $4, it is fantastic! So dye away my friends and let me know how it turns out!!!

Life's Little Obsession...Gilmore Girls

Most people raise an eyebrow from this admission, but Gilmore Girls is one of my all time favorite tv shows. It's my secret pleasure! For those of you who do not know me, when I get fixated on something that I want, I cannot let it go until I get it. This holds true for everything...shoes, food, make-up, a hair color, and as it pertains to this, ALL seasons of the Gilmore Girls.

It all started as a simple little Sunday relaxation from 1 - 3 p.m. on the Soap Network. It was my one time throughout the week that would do absolutely nothing and just enjoy the show that I so loved so much. Then to my excitement, I found out it was on during the week too! LOVELY...Cue the DVR! I realized that I was once again becoming obsessed, when I found myself on a Friday evening scouring through ebay to find one seller that offered all the seasons for one price.

Luckily for me, it happened the following Monday morning! I skillfully won the first six season seasons and bought the last off of amazon along with Kelly Kutrone's new book (btw...great book for all you girl power chicky's out there). I started at the beginning, and was surprised at how many of the early episodes I had missed. It took me 3 weeks to get through all the seasons. Really, any free time I had I spent watching my beloved DVD's.

This show is one that speaks to me. I love all of the incredibly well written fast speak, the 'isms" that you catch more now than when it was originally on (if I could only write that well), the mother-daughter relationship, the besties friendship between Sookie and Loreli (reminds me so much of my closest friend Gina), and well honestly...it is all of it. I could go on and on, but there is just something about this show that empowers me and everytime I feel stuck in life or creating or whatever, I turn to this show to pull me out of my rut...so as I sit here typing this posting, I have just put the season one dvd in, got myself some ice cream and have assumed the position on the couch! I love this show!

A large part of my business is custom design work. So when Tammy from Lifestyles Unlimited asked Flair Designery to design a card for her re-entrance in to the interior design world, I was really excited!

I am a HUGE believer that your business card needs to be as individual as the person it is representing, which is why I almost always recommend doing a different size business card than usual. Tammy and I decided that her card would be 3.5 wide by 2.5 tall. Totally different and 100% unexpected! In addition to this card, we did custom address labels to match on an opal metallic envelope.

When your a designer, of any kind, it is all about personal style. And having a card, a logo, even a envelope that is outside the norm, sets you apart and people remember that!

Birthday Boy

Last evening we celebrated the hubs birthday. He had a rough day, so I wanted to go somewhere that I knew he would really enjoy himself. We ended up after much deliberation at the 1904 Beerhouse, a new restaurant that is part of the new River City Casino.

They have 100 beers from across the world and 32 beers on tap. Aside from the gi-normous beer (yum!) we had the most divine appetizer ever! Warm pretzel sticks...there went my diet! I'm usually not the type for this type of food, but honestly I haven't had something this good, that I could honestly rave about, in a LONG time.

This restaurant had a load of charm, a quartet playing jazz (loves it) and great food. It was a very refreshing evening out. I SO needed it!

Why So Blue

My color of choice for 2010 is definitely blue. Especially royal blue, which is why I am in love with the above dress from the Atelier Versace Spring 2010 collection. Five years and one wedding cake ago, I so totally could have fit in that dress, if I was taller than 5'6", lived definitely somewhere more glamourous than STL, and oh yeah...maybe a model...but today I will settle for THOSE SHOES! Where oh where could I get those shoes. That might be one for the possessionista!

I am a huge Gossip Girl fan. I wish I could say it was for the clothing only, but have you seen Chace Crawford or Ed Westwick. If they only knew I existed!!! 1. On a recent episode Blake Lively wore these absolutely chic blue denim leggings by Victoria Beckham. They too can be yours for a not-so-small fee of $275+. However, I found something very similar at American Apparel for $26 and ordered them up in a hot second. 2. The next is my new favorite Rumor Has It dress from Lulus.com. 3. I know these L.A.M.B. heels are grandtabulously high, and as my sister would say, "you can't walk it those, you'll look ridiculous!" But, I don't care...I want them anyway. 4. My most recent obsession is this Porch Swing Scarf from Beautiful Bridget on Etsy!

Wow! What a season it has been. Tomorrow will be the last of my deliveries for the 2009 holiday season and I want to thank everyone for their continued support. I have the best customers and I can't wait to see what 2010 will bring. Because so many of you let me into your homes...I decided to share a bit of mine with you.

I fell in total lust with these birch vase covers at Pottery Barn. They were a total impluse buy, but look fabulous in my dining room. The tree in the silver pail was a creation all my own, made of a 3 foot tree and galvanized pail. So incredibly simple and so chic all at the same time!

My "big" tree is a yearly work in progress. I have always wanted to have a tree made up of entirely all glass Santa's and this year I finally have enough. This tree is 6 foot tall and potted in a 2 foot urn. I think I have about 9 strands of lights on this tree...who doesn't love lots of lights. I also have white feather boas on my wall shelves and mantle. It gives the appearance of snow - I totally love this! And lastly my little furbaby on his usual perch atop the couch...

{Put a Ring On It}

Anyone who knows me knows that when it comes to rings, shoes and bags, I never do anything small. Enter Exhibit A. I was supposed to be out Christmas shopping, but as the song goes...Oh what fun it is to shop...err...I mean ride...I just couldn't help myself! I found this slice of heaven at Aldo Accessories . Called the "Toot", it is reasonably priced at $22. With it's bright flower-shaped crystals, it is the prefect ring for all occasions, so I decided to add it to my collection! This ring however is not for the light-hearted. It measures about 2.5 inches wide and has some weight to it. Definitely obsessionworthy!

This is my favorite time of year! There is something to be said when you step out the front door and just the smell of the air can bring them memories back. When I was a kid I loved this time of year because it meant two things...first HALLOWEEN and second CHRISTMAS! That being said...I would like to introduce David Barnett Photography. His years of experience coupled with his natural ability to photograph everyone from the wee nuggets to the entire family ensure that he will capture the moments that you want to be sure to remember.

Hosting a Fabulous Party on a Recession Budget

Here are some fun and creative ways to be budget conscious and still host an amazing party:

Hand deliver invitations to those that you can. Send paper invitations to close family members and friends and email a scanned version to those that have email.
Create your own decorations with your family from fun things found around the home. Glitter leaves or pine cones. Take old christmas lights and fill a clear vase with them. Pick some flowers from your yard and vase them up; tie a ribbon around the middle of the vase and call it a day.
Use your own glassware instead of purchasing paper products. If you don't have any...a fun place to pick some up is a flea market or thrift store. There is nothing more chic right now than to have non-matching place settings:) Don't be afraid to mix and match, just choose complimentary colors.
Host your party between meal times or later in the evening, such as between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. or after 7:30 p.m. People are more likely to just snack versus eat or expect an entire meal.
Host a theme party or a potluck and ask guests to bring a dish. It doesn't have to be extravagant - just make sure there is no overlapping of dishes.
If you are serving alcohol, limit the choices available and most importantly RECYCLE. This money can then be saved for your next festive affair.
Break out those old board games. It is always fun to have a blast from the past!
